In my Hatha Yoga classes I aim to bring the mind and body into union to create wholeness to the individual mentally and physically. In Patanjali’s Yoga sutras the aim of yoga is to bring the “mind into silence” Yogas chitta vritti nirodah which means Yoga is the cessation of the fluctuations of the mind. This is the true meaning of yoga practice and should be the aim of all Yoga, unfortunately this sometimes gets forgotten as there can be a tendency to try and struggle into the so called ‘final’ postures. It is not how deep you are in a posture that is important it is your depth of awareness in the posture, trying to establish a single pointed awareness throughout the practice creates the greatest benefits.

The fundamental postures and pranayama exercises are covered during classes, modifications and variations are introduced for people of different abilities or for those recovering from injury. The classes are deep working and postures are held for a reasonable amount of time to allow the mind to settle and the body to adjust and relax in the posture, this helps to facilitate structural and emotional change. Individual tuition is recommended for students recovering from injury or wishing to deepen their practice on all levels, sessions can then be tailor made for the desired purpose.
If we are working with the body the postures become more comfortable the longer we are in them, if the postures become a struggle then we are starting to go too far too soon and we need to slowly ease off in the posture, otherwise the body with begin to contract.

As stated in the Yoga sutras “The postures should be steady and comfortable, they are mastered when all effort is relaxed”.

Being aware of how the energy moves throughout the body and where blockages exist allows us to dissolve the inner conflicts that sometimes we are unaware of.
It is only when the life force moves freely throughout the body can we enjoy increased vitality and health on a physical, mental and spiritual level.

I’m afraid classes are unsuitable for pregnancy.
